“The Stone House” 1924.
John Henry Peebles, Jr. and his family moved to a frame home on this site about 1918-1920. That original early 20th century dwelling was lost to fire or termites in the early 1920′s, and the Stone House was built by Mr. Peebles in 1924. It uses many local materials including cedar and tulip poplar paneling and heart pine floors. The stone is a native limestone or low-grade marble quarried on the Peebles farm. The window lintels were curbstones from Huntsville. The house originally had a terra cotta tile roof. Some elements of the original house remain, such as the front porch and a large cedar trunk that supports the foyer.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Shaw lived in the house for over 30 years until 2004. In 2008, Jory and Rush Harris Mitchell (great-granddaughter of John Henry Peebles, Jr.) returned to Mooresville and renovated the Stone House, including updating the kitchen and adding a sunroom to the west side of the house.
